Karen McMillan Guerra
Team In Training 2002

Hello Friends!

Welcome to my Team In Training Web Site!

Please sign my guestbook!

Once again, I have decided to run a marathon with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training (TNT). This year, I'll be running the Rock 'n Roll 1/2 Marathon in Virginia Beach in preparation for the big one, THE NEW YORK CITY MARATHON!

The Rock 'n Roll 1/2 Marathon is a very special event compromised mostly of Team In Training members. I was lucky enough to participate in the inaugural running of this fantastic event last year (Time 2:02). Last year, the Rock 'n Roll served as a training run for the NY Marathon and I've chosen to run it again and use it as my fund raiser as well!

Then, this fall, I'll not only get to run in the world's best marathon, but I'll yet again run in honor of my beloved friend Eileen and a several other honorees, Tom O'Hara and Jane Collette, celebrating their remissions in true Team In Training style!

I'm hoping I can count on all of you to lend your support to my cause and help me to raise my goal of $2,000 dollars for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Why another TNT event?
Following my best friend Eileen's diagnosis with lymphoma in the summer of 1999, doing all I can to help find a cure has become one of my passions. At the age of 27 watching one of my best friends face cancer was extremely difficult. Many of you have had the marvelous opportunity to meet her, she is one of my best friends from Indiana. Fortunately, Eileen entered remission in August of 2001 and just had a BABY in May, 2002! She continues to strive, battle scars and all. Finding a cure to this disease will be the most valuable gift I could ever give to her and others afflicted with these cancers. So, again this year I will be running in honor of my extraordinary, beautiful friend Eileen who will conquer this disease in true style.

My entire Team In Training and I will also be running in honor of two other very special survivors, Tom O'Hara and Jane Collette. Information on them will follow as I get to know them better, but at our first meeting on June 18, 2002 I got to first hand see what fantastic, inspirational people they are.

Through the work done by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and all of the TNT members, the chances for survival continue to increase every day.

Please remember: only 25% of any monies raised are used for expenses to fund TNT. That means the ramining 75% of ALL funds raised are acutally used for research to find a cure!

Through my training I will face struggles and pain (it's not easy running 39.3 miles!), however nothing can compare to the hardships of surviving chemotherapy and facing each day knowing that your health has been compromised. I will hold thoughts of Eileen , Tom and Jane dear to my heart while I challenge myself to be as courageous as they have been in facing their illnesses. Plus, I'll always have Eileen's "Bone Marrow Story" to give me the extra kick when I need it! Whatever the amoung, any donation will be greatly appreaciated, and please remember that all gifts are tax deductible.

Thank you for your time, I hope that I can count on you to join me in supporting this wonderful cause!

Love,
Karen

Eileen Matzke

Eileen of Michigan City, Indiana is one of my best friends from Indiana University. Together, we made our way through Dental Hygiene School and graduated in 1995. Eileen continues to practice dental hygiene in Indiana where she lives with her faulous husband Scott, their brand new daughter Jillian Nicole and their 3 adorable cats.

Eileen was diagnosed with lymphoma at the age of 27 in the summer of 1998. After completing a full round of chemotherapy followed by radiation, Eileen has been in remission since the fall of 1999. Today she is happy and healthy with a brand new daughter!

Eileen is one of those special and unique people who each of us hope to be fortunate enought to share our lives with. Throughout all of her treatments Eileen proved that she is a true survivor with an incredible spirit. We are all extremely thankful for the innovative Lymphoma treatments which have enabled Eileen to thrive and live a happy, healthy life!

Tom O'Hara

In March of 2002, Tom a loving husband to Mary, father of four childern, Tom, Lauren, Alyssa and Heather and grandfather of three, THomas, Jordan and Ryan was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

While Tom was still undergoing treatments he joined the Team In Training last year and ran the Dublin Marathon on October 29, 2001!

This year he plans to do a century bike ride (100 miles!) along with the TNT!

Jane Collette

28 year old Jane grew up in West Caldwell and now resides in Hoboken, NJ. A graduate of Miami of Ohio, Jane lived in Moscow, Russia for three years after graduation and had a chance to really experience the world.

In August 2001 she received the diagnosis of Hodgkin's Lymhoma. Having just completed chemotherapy and radiation treatments this past April 23, 2002 Jane now seems to be on the fast track to good health.

She is very excited to be an Honored Teammate for TNT and thanks ALL of you for your donations!
